Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin are two people who are trying to make a difference in the country by bringing justice to those who have been wronged by the judicial system. The two of them are the founders of the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund, an organization that strives to bring about justice, particularly to those who belong to minority communities in the country.
Even though the United States is seen as a primarily forward thinking country, there is still a lot of racism that prevails. People belonging to certain white supremacy groups in the country are of the opinion that America is theirs and theirs alone, so they are not very welcoming towards people from minority groups living in the country.
This can have some seriously bad effects on the people, especially if the people inflicting this kind of injustice are a part of the country’s judicial system.
Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin got to experience this kind of injustice first hand, which is what led them to form the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. At the time, they had both started up their publication, which they released weekly to the people living in the same city as them.
At the time, Joe Arpaio was the Maricopa County Sheriff and had control over the area that Lacey and Larkin were living in.
Joe Arpaio had gained a reputation for being one of the country’s most tough sheriff’s, owing to the fact that he had put away a large number of people, more than anyone had ever done before. Most of the people that he had put away would be tried for living illegally in the country. However, reports started coming up from the people who were put in these situations, claiming that they did have a valid citizenship and there was no basis for their arrests and punishments. Numerous individuals and media outlets also started realizing that all the people that Arpaio was putting away belonged to the Hispanic community.
Lacey and Larkin decided to cover this in their newsletter, and published it for the people of Phoenix to read. In their article, they outlined the various reports of individuals that were surfacing and also indicated that Joe Arpaio was mainly targeting people from minority communities.
Soon after the article was published, Lacey and Larkin were forcefully taken from their homes and kept in two separate cells which were handled by Joe Arpaio himself. They were kept there for a total period of about forty-eight hours before they were released.
Soon after they were released, they filed a suit against Joe Arpaio and his lawyer for their misuse of power, since none of the arrests were warranted by any court. The case ended with a settlement that the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department had to pay. Lacey and Larkin thereon decided that they would use this money to aid people who have had the same thing happen to them.
The organization has gained massive support from people all over the country, who believe that changes need to be made to the system to uphold the rights of people belonging to minority communities.
