Elisabeth DeVos the Reformer

Elizabeth Prince was Betsy DeVos’ common name before she got married. She was very active in politics even in her elementary school and her tutors noticed that she had a leadership ability that was not common among her peers. Consequently, she headed many clubs in the school and brought new changes even at that early age. Upon joining Michigan University, Betsy vied for political posts and was most times elected as students’ leader. Many attest to the fact that she delivered her promises to the students and made many improvements to the school system.

Although Betsy is now a wife, a mother, and a grandmother, she has not desisted from politics and leadership as she claims this is her purpose for living. She has served in numerous political posts such as the president of the Michigan Republican Party, where she was reelected four consecutive times. Betsy has also actively led campaigns in party organizations as well as committees that deal with political action. However, recently, Betsy has desisted from doing politics; instead, she focuses on education reform. Betsy says that helping students is transformational to generations. She says that denying a child an educational right is equivalent to killing or maiming an entire generation.

Betsy and Dick DeVos have a family foundation which they use to help reform the education sector. The two are critics of the old educational system as they say that it does not favor the kids from the wrong zip codes. Instead, they say that it denies these children the right to achieve the American dream. As a result, Betsy and her husband help the kids in the Charter and Voucher schools, which offer a better learning environment for the children. Moreover, the schools offer the kids more options as compared to the public schools. In an interview, Betsy said that many kids have transferred to the Voucher and Charter School because they were more advanced than public schools.

Other than that, Betsy DeVos is also an innovator as the chairman of the WindQuest Group, which she co-owns with her husband. The privately owned company invests in technology, manufacturing ventures, and clean energy. As Betsy actively participates in the group, she says that she wishes to see a world that is consistently advancing to new, technological, faster and more effective, ways of production.

Moreover, Betsy DeVos is also given to many not for profit activities as she runs many foundations and organizations that help the disadvantaged in the society. Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation gives donations to people and organizations. She also leads numerous boards at national and local levels. Betsy founded the Kids Hope U.S.A, the Mars Hill Bible Church, and The Foundation for Excellence in education. These organizations are geared towards raising godly kids and helping children advance in education.
